Microsoft have recently taken the search functionality that is an integral part of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and
spun it off as a separate product - Microsoft Search Server 2008. The search capabilities from Office SharePoint Server have been
extended slightly and the management interface has been made much less complicated. Search Server can be implement as a standalone
Enterprise Search solution without the need for Office SharePoint Server.
Microsoft have also made Search Server 2008 Express available as a free download. This contains the exact same
Enterprise Search capabilities as its licensed counterpart. The only restriction is that Search Server 2008 Express can only
be installed on a single server.
Search Server 2008 Express is an ideal solution for Small and Medium Businesses looking to implement Enterprise Search. It can
quickly and easily be installed alongside a Windows SharePoint Services implementation in order to extend the search functionality
to allow the indexing of intranet & Internet websites and file shares.
